Retired police officers protest unpaid benefits in Río Grande

Approximately 540 retired police officers from the former National Territory of Tierra del Fuego have set up a tent in Río Grande to protest the non-payment of compensatory benefits. The protesters claim they have not received these specific payments for 15 months.

According to group representative Alfredo Gatti, the unpaid funds are a compensatory component intended for those who served before the territory's provincialization. The group alleges that the cessation of these payments has led to significant debt for many families. They have directed their grievances toward the provincial Executive Branch, the board of the Pension Fund (Caja de Previsión), and police leadership, citing a lack of response and discriminatory treatment compared to active security and penitentiary personnel.

In response to the ongoing dispute, three members of the group have filed a request for impeachment against Governor Gustavo Melella before the Legislature, seeking an investigation into actions or omissions regarding the pension regime. The protesters stated they will maintain their encampment in front of the police headquarters indefinitely until the conflict is resolved.
