Retirees Face Rising Debt in Argentina and Discount Violations in Panama
In Argentina, 11.4% of pensioners – about 457,596 seniors – are now in arrears, a near‑tripling of the share recorded a year earlier. Many rely on credit cards and loans to cover basic expenses such as food, medicine and transport, and 4 million retirees are indebted, with roughly 460,000 facing legal pressure or possible asset seizures. The situation has been highlighted by experts on NET TV, who note that low pension payments and stagnant benefits have driven seniors to sell property and incur mounting debts.
In Panama's Los Santos province, five restaurants and related businesses have been summoned for allegedly breaching Law 6 of 1987, which mandates a 25% discount for retirees at eateries (15% for franchise outlets) and a 20% discount at pharmacies. The consumer‑protection agency Acodeco, led regionally by Roberto Montenegro, reported the violations after inspections of about 100 establishments, emphasizing the need for proper signage and compliance to protect senior consumers.
Both stories illustrate growing financial pressures on older adults in the region, whether through rising personal debt in Argentina or inadequate enforcement of consumer‑rights discounts in Panama.
