Retirees in France return to work to supplement low pensions

Many retirees in France are returning to the workforce to supplement their incomes due to significant drops in earnings following retirement. For many, the transition from employee to retiree results in a loss of 25% to 50% of their previous income.

In 2022, approximately 10.6% of seniors aged 65-74 lived below the poverty line, representing over two million people. To mitigate this financial gap, some seniors are taking on seasonal manual labor, such as fruit harvesting, even when faced with extreme weather conditions like heatwaves.
