Retirement engagement and employment trends for seniors

Seniors are increasingly seeking ways to remain active during retirement through both voluntary engagement and part-time employment. In Halle, Germany, the Freiwilligen-Agentur Halle is hosting a workshop on October 29, 2026, specifically for individuals aged 60 and older. The session, part of the ‘Erfahrungsschätze Halle’ project, aims to help retirees identify volunteer opportunities that align with their skills, interests, and personal boundaries.

Regarding paid employment, data indicates that 13 percent of retirees aged 65 to 74 were employed as of 2024, with many opting for ‘minijobs’. Since January 1, 2023, there have been no earnings limits for those receiving an old-age pension in Germany, meaning additional income does not result in pension reductions. However, retirees must account for health and long-term care insurance contributions. Due to the dynamic coupling of the minijob limit to the minimum wage, the monthly earnings threshold is expected to rise to 603 euros in 2026 and 633 euros in 2027.
