Retirement income management and tax implications

Retiring from the workforce does not necessarily result in a lower tax burden. While employment income ceases, the combination of various income streams can create unexpected tax liabilities and higher costs for services like Medicare.

Key sources of taxable income during retirement include withdrawals from traditional retirement accounts, pension payments, investment gains, interest, and Social Security benefits. Because traditional account withdrawals are typically treated as ordinary income, large one-time withdrawals for significant expenses, such as home repairs, can push individuals into higher tax brackets.

Furthermore, federal rules regarding required minimum distributions (RMDs) can force larger taxable distributions if a portfolio grows significantly. Financial planning should account for the interaction between these different income types and the timing of withdrawals to avoid 'bracket creep' and unexpected increases in Medicare premiums.
