Retirement planning and superannuation technicalities in Australia
Financial experts are highlighting critical timing and psychological factors affecting retirement planning in Australia. Regarding superannuation, MLC senior technical service manager Scott Quinn warns that delays in lodging a notice of intent (NOI) to claim personal deductible contributions can lead to lost tax deductions. Specific actions, such as starting a transition-to-retirement (TTR) pension, moving benefits to an account-based pension, or making partial rollovers and withdrawals, can disqualify a member from claiming a deduction if the NOI is not processed correctly.
Separately, wealth advisory partner Marc Siciliano of William Buck notes that the fear of outliving savings is a primary concern for pre-retirees, regardless of wealth level. To manage this, experts suggest a structured approach: transitioning the mindset from saving to spending, calculating essential fixed costs versus discretionary spending, and establishing a contingency fund for healthcare or aged care needs.
