Retirement planning experts call for pension reforms in Switzerland and Germany
Financial experts are highlighting the challenges and necessary reforms regarding retirement planning in Switzerland and Germany.
In Switzerland, Thomas Bamert of Rothschild & Co Bank notes that current pension systems are designed for linear career paths, which disadvantages part-time workers. He points out that fixed coordination deductions in the second pillar can significantly reduce pension credits for those working reduced hours, leading to a substantial loss in wealth due to the missed compound interest effect. Bamert suggests that more flexible pension plans covering a wider age range could better accommodate modern, non-linear careers.
In Germany, Deutsche Bank CEO Christian Sewing has called for fundamental pension reforms to supplement the statutory pension system with more capital-funded models. Speaking at a financial summit, Sewing advocated for increased financial literacy and the implementation of automatic enrollment models, similar to the 'opt-out' systems used in the United Kingdom. He argued that mobilizing private capital could provide greater security for citizens while simultaneously financing innovation and economic growth in Europe.
