Retirement planning importance grows amid Hungarian demographic shifts
Recent research and demographic data highlight the growing importance of early retirement planning in Hungary. According to KSH data, by 2026, 21.1 percent of the Hungarian population will be aged 65 or older, creating structural pressure on the state pension system.
A study by Generali reveals a significant gap between desired and actual savings. While Hungarians consider a monthly saving of 90,000 HUF ideal for retirement, they currently manage only 38,000 HUF. The research suggests that awareness of increased longevity would motivate many to start saving; 57 percent of those currently without retirement savings would begin regular contributions if they were certain of a long life.
Experts emphasize that time is a critical factor due to the effects of compound interest. Starting early allows for longer accumulation periods, making regular, smaller contributions more effective than larger amounts started later in life. Among those aged 50–65, half believe they should have started saving at the beginning of their careers.
