Retirement policy changes in Uruguay and Spain

In Uruguay, the government led by Yamandú Orsi has introduced a bill to allow early retirement at age 60 for workers with 30 years of service. This initiative aims to address concerns regarding the previous administration's pension reform, which gradually increased the retirement age to 65. The proposal seeks to provide relief for workers in physically demanding sectors, such as construction or rural labor, who may face greater difficulty remaining in the workforce.

In Spain, upcoming changes to retirement requirements in 2027 are prompting workers to evaluate the timing of their applications. According to analysis from the BBVA Pension Institute, the transition period involves shifting age requirements based on years of contributions. For those retiring in 2026, the age for non-penalized retirement depends on specific contribution thresholds, while 2027 will introduce new standards requiring 67 years of age for those with fewer than 38 years and six months of contributions.
