Retirement sustainability faces challenges from aging and technology

Experts are warning of significant challenges facing future pension systems due to demographic shifts and technological changes. Financial expert Natalia de Santiago notes that while life expectancy after retirement was seven years when pension systems were created, it now exceeds 23 years. This, combined with declining birth rates, threatens the sustainability of public benefits.

In Spain, the Ministry of Finance has indicated that pension payments are projected to absorb 80% of the state deficit next year. While Spain currently maintains a high replacement rate—the percentage of previous income maintained during retirement—estimated between 70% and 80%, there are concerns that younger generations may not enjoy similar levels of support.

Economist Niño Becerra predicts that by 2060, the retirement age will be considerably higher than it is today. He emphasizes that rapid technological advancements will reshape the labor market, requiring workers to engage in continuous learning and adaptability to remain active longer. Experts advise individuals to begin early financial planning and skill acquisition to prepare for a changing economic landscape.
