Retirement wealth thresholds depend on household resources

Determining whether a retiree is considered wealthy involves more than just the amount of their monthly pension. While certain financial benchmarks exist, such as 3,530 euros, 4,000 euros, and 4,500 euros per month, these figures represent a standard of living rather than a direct pension amount.

According to Drees, calculating financial comfort requires looking at the total available resources of a household, including wealth income and social benefits, as well as the household's composition. For instance, a single person receiving a specific amount is in a different financial position than a couple receiving the same total amount. Therefore, pension amounts alone can be misleading when attempting to measure the actual standard of living for retirees.
