Retro raises over $21 million in Series A funding

Lone Palm Labs, the company behind the photo-sharing application Retro, has raised more than $21 million in Series A funding. According to SEC filings, the funding round was finalized in December, and PitchBook estimates the startup's valuation has exceeded $100 million.

Developed by former Instagram product engineers Nathan Sharp and Ryan Olson, Retro focuses on private sharing between friends rather than algorithmic, creator-driven feeds. The app allows users to share weekly photos, create shared albums, and revisit old memories through a “rewind” feature.

Unlike many social media competitors, Retro does not utilize an advertising-based monetization model. Instead, the company relies on in-app subscriptions that provide access to advanced features such as video support, unlimited history, and special app icons. Since its launch in 2023, the app has reached approximately 7 million downloads.
