Reus launches Escola dels Oficis to tackle construction trades shortage
Companies in Reus and the wider Camp de Tarragona region are struggling to find qualified workers such as electricians, plumbers, welders, crane operators and other essential tradespeople. The shortage is seen as a city‑wide challenge that threatens the continuity of construction projects and the transfer of generational knowledge.
In response, the municipal government, the Chamber of Commerce and local trade unions have backed the creation of the Escola dels Oficis. The new vocational school, to be housed in the historic Mas Carandell building, will link practical training directly to job opportunities, preserving industrial heritage while providing the machinery and workshops needed for hands‑on learning.
Architect Juan Goñi highlighted the market impact, noting that "Diuen que en l'obra es guanya poc, però un electricista guanya més de 3000 euros". Earnings for specialised electricians can reach around €3,000 a month, reflecting the high demand and the urgency of addressing the skills gap.
