Revanth Reddy sparks controversy with Lord Ram and Lord Shiva remarks

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has sparked a significant political controversy following remarks made during a media event in New Delhi. Reddy drew distinctions between religious and regional identities, stating that South Indians are Dravidians and devotees of Lord Shiva, while North Indians are Aryans and devotees of Lord Ram. He further characterized Lord Shiva as the 'God of the poor' and Lord Ram as the 'God of the rich,' suggesting that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has appropriated Lord Ram as a political symbol.

Reddy also questioned why Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other BJP leaders frequently use the slogan 'Jai Shri Ram' but do not similarly chant 'Har Har Mahadev' on public platforms. He alleged that the BJP represents a party of the wealthy.

The BJP has responded with sharp criticism. Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar accused the Chief Minister of drawing political lines between deities, while BJP National Spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari alleged the remarks were an attempt to divide Hindu society for vote-bank politics. Other leaders, including Sudhanshu Trivedi, accused the Congress party of viewing Hinduism through a 'Semitic' lens. The Samajwadi Party also urged the Chief Minister to focus on governance and the underprivileged rather than commenting on matters of faith.
