Revel Pharmaceuticals unveils enzyme that cuts age‑related tissue compounds

Scientists at Revel Pharmaceuticals, led by Aaron Cravens, engineered an enzyme called CMLase that degrades advanced glycation end‑products (AGEs), chemical compounds that accumulate in human tissues with age and contribute to chronic diseases. The team used artificial‑intelligence screening of more than 50,000 microbial DNA sequences and directed‑evolution techniques to optimise the enzyme's activity.

In laboratory tests the enzyme reduced AGE levels in skin samples from a 70‑year‑old donor to levels comparable to those of a 30‑year‑old. The findings were published on 16 July in the journal Nature Communications, suggesting a new approach to mitigating tissue‑level ageing and its associated health risks.
