Revelstoke council defers crosswalk for The Studio Dance & Wellness

The owners of The Studio Dance & Wellness, Jacqui Gardiner and Kenley Knock, have asked the City of Revelstoke to install a zebra crossing at the intersection of First Street East and McArthur Avenue. The crossing would serve children attending the studio’s dance classes, the licensed Little Movers Daycare, and students from nearby Begbie View Elementary School, who currently navigate a busy corridor with limited sightlines.

On June 23 the city council unanimously approved a motion to add a crosswalk with sidewalk letdowns, but the wording was changed to make the proposal “subject to engineering review,” effectively deferring the project. The studio offered to contribute $3,000 toward the estimated $10,000 cost. ICBC reported no crashes at the site between 2021 and 2025, though it noted numerous near‑miss incidents. The studio has been lobbying the public works department for nearly two years, sending multiple letters that received no response, and cites drivers mistaking a low‑curb entryway for a sidewalk, leading to curbside parking that blocks visibility.
