Revelstoke council defers housing plans for BC Hydro staff

The Revelstoke City Council is currently deferring decisions regarding the development of housing for 108 BC Hydro staff members. These workers are required for the installation of the sixth generating unit (REV-6) at the Revelstoke Dam, a project scheduled to take place between 2027 and 2037.

City staff have recommended utilizing Oscar Street lands for the project. One proposed option involves disassembling and refurbishing two existing BC Housing-owned modular buildings, a process estimated to cost $21.5 million. If implemented, the Revelstoke Community Housing Society would lease the units to BC Hydro for a decade before converting 65 of them into community housing after 2037.

The REV-6 project aims to increase the dam’s clean energy capacity by 500 megawatts, which could power an additional 200,000 homes and increase the province-wide electricity supply by seven per cent. Construction on the new unit began in mid-June, and workers are expected to arrive in the area next year.
