Revelstoke to install 3,720 automated water meters
The City of Revelstoke is preparing to install 3,720 automated water meters to transition from a flat-rate billing system to one based on individual property usage. The project, which includes residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional properties, is being carried out by the Canadian branch of Neptune Technology Group.
Supported by $4.64 in grant funding from the British Columbia government, the initiative aims to help the province reach a 30 per cent reduction in water use to support local ecosystems and mitigate drought. The city expects the installation process to begin in August and conclude by late November.
Local officials noted that the program is intended to help public works staff identify leaks, improve system efficiency, and lower emergency repair costs. However, the municipality is working to address resident concerns regarding mandatory monitoring, potential cost increases, and technical issues such as meter performance during winter freezes. Mayor Gary Sulz has called for a “gentle” approach to implementing the changes and addressing public reservations.
