Revised MS diagnostic criteria improve early detection

Revised diagnostic criteria for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) are significantly improving early detection rates. A study conducted by researchers at the Medical University of Hanover (MHH) compared the previous diagnostic standards with the updated 2024 McDonald criteria.

The new criteria expand the scope of diagnosis by including changes in the optic nerve as a fifth location for inflammatory lesions. Additionally, a diagnosis can now be made based solely on MRI imaging, even in the absence of clinical symptoms.

According to study leader Prof. Dr. Thomas Skripuletz, these updates have increased the proportion of first-time diagnoses by nearly ten percentage points, allowing patients who previously would have gone undetected to receive earlier identification and treatment.
