Rewe Group launches instant grocery delivery in Germany

The Rewe Group is expanding its e-food offerings by launching an instant delivery service in partnership with Uber Eats, Wolt, and Lieferando. This new service aims to deliver groceries to customers within one hour.

As of Tuesday, the rapid delivery service has launched in four German cities: Frankfurt (via Uber Eats), Cologne (via Wolt), and Hamburg and Jena (via Lieferando). Clemens Bauer, head of Rewe's e-food business, stated that the company intends to expand this service to more major cities by the end of the year, with long-term plans to include small and medium-sized towns.

Bauer noted that while the rapid delivery hype seen during the pandemic proved economically unsustainable for some providers, it remains a significant growth area, particularly among younger generations who demand high speed and constant availability. He highlighted that e-commerce market shares for groceries in countries like France and the UK reach 10 to 15 percent, whereas Germany currently sits at approximately four percent.
