The Rewe Group operates as a cooperative rather than a traditional stock corporation, utilizing a complex power structure. While led by a CEO, authority is distributed across several board members, including roles for finance, human resources, purchasing, and digitalization.

CEO Lionel Souque, who has led the company since July 2017, recently had his contract extended until the end of 2028. Souque has defended the cooperative principle as a key factor for the company's success.

The group employs approximately 384,000 people globally, with over 280,000 based in Germany. In 2025, the group reported total external revenue exceeding 100 billion euros. Beyond food retail, the company's portfolio includes the tourism sector via DER Touristik and the international discount retailer Penny.
