Rewe implements new cooling technology for grocery delivery service

German retailer Rewe is upgrading its grocery delivery service with new cooling technology to better manage temperature-sensitive goods. Following a successful testing phase, the company has launched regular operations using this system at its fulfillment center in Cologne.

In partnership with Va-Q-Tec, Rewe is implementing delivery boxes equipped with ultra-thin vacuum insulation panels and a cooling accumulator located in the lid. This passive system does not require electricity and is designed to maintain the cold chain even when outdoor temperatures reach 35 degrees Celsius.

The new method allows for multiple temperature zones within a single delivery, enabling the transport of various chilled products and meat simultaneously. This innovation eliminates the need for specialized refrigerated vehicles and aims to reduce the company's reliance on dry ice, thereby improving efficiency and reducing safety risks for delivery personnel. Rewe plans to roll out this technology to additional locations across Germany by 2027.
