Rex Airlines suspends regional flights to Sydney

Rex Airlines has announced the temporary suspension of its regional flight services between Sydney and both Port Macquarie and Orange, effective October 25. The airline cited high aviation fuel prices, driven by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, alongside insufficient passenger demand as the primary reasons the routes are no longer commercially viable.

The suspension leaves QantasLink as the sole provider for the Port Macquarie service. Local officials and representatives have expressed concern regarding the impact on regional connectivity. Port Macquarie-Hastings Council Mayor Adam Roberts noted the decision could negatively affect the visitor economy, while Nationals MP Alison Penfold raised concerns that reduced competition might lead to higher airfares for local passengers.

Rex stated it will monitor the situation and may lift the suspension if fuel prices decrease to a level that allows for commercial viability. Customers with existing bookings on or after October 25 will be offered full refunds or the option to rebook on alternative Rex services at no extra cost.
