Rey Mysterio reflects on WCW unmasking and career history

Professional wrestler Rey Mysterio has recently reflected on significant moments from his career, including his unmasking in WCW and his history working with Batista.

Kevin Nash stated that he was responsible for booking the decision to have Mysterio lose his mask at WCW SuperBrawl IX in 1999. Nash explained that the move was driven by a major advertising campaign, noting that ‘you’re not going to be in Times Square with a luchador mask on in an ad.’ While acknowledging the controversy regarding lucha libre traditions, Nash believed Mysterio’s appeal as a performer was not dependent on the mask, though he noted it was a significant merchandising tool.

Mysterio also discussed his professional relationship with Batista, noting that he enjoyed both being tag team partners and rivals. He described their matches as being able to ‘go as hard as I can without hurting him’ due to Batista’s physical solidity. Mysterio also commented on Batista’s transition into a successful acting career, expressing support for his pursuit of new professional goals.
