Reykholt assault trial involves physical violence and theft

Six Icelanders are facing charges for a large-scale and particularly dangerous physical assault on a Palestinian man with Maltese citizenship in Reykholt in April 2024. The case, which was heard at the South Iceland District Court, also involves the theft of 17.66 million ISK from the victim's bank account.

Financial analysis presented in court detailed how the stolen funds were distributed among the defendants. Ingunn Rut Sigurðardóttir received approximately 3.5 million ISK, while other individuals received varying amounts ranging from nearly 2 million to 8.5 million ISK. Ingunn has partially confessed to involvement in the case but denies participating in the physical violence.

The victim reported being held captive for three days before being sent from Iceland to Malta. Medical professionals testified to the severity of the attack, noting the victim suffered a broken jaw, broken teeth, and significant psychological trauma, including active PTSD symptoms, fear, and difficulty sleeping.
