Reykjavík reports 12.2 billion ISK budget deficit
The City of Reykjavík reported a significant financial deficit for the first six months of 2026, falling 12.2 billion ISK short of its projected budget. While the city had anticipated a surplus, the actual results for the A and B sectors showed a combined deficit of 5.5 billion ISK.
Several factors contributed to this downturn, including higher-than-expected inflation and increased capital costs. The actual consumer price index rose by 3.74% from the start of the year, significantly exceeding the 1.75% used in budget planning. Additionally, capital costs for the group rose by 5.6 billion ISK compared to the same period last year, totaling 19.7 billion ISK.
Other financial pressures included a 2.7 billion ISK increase in wage expenditures due to collective bargaining agreements, and a 2.3 billion ISK negative impact from valuation changes in Félagsbústaðir investment assets. The city has indicated that streamlining measures will be implemented to address these challenges.
