Artificial intelligence transitions from experimentation to autonomous agentic systems

The global business landscape is undergoing a significant shift as artificial intelligence moves from experimental pilots to integrated, agentic systems capable of executing complex workflows. In the automotive sector, AI agents are being utilized to optimize sales processes, personalize customer experiences, and manage inventory. Similarly, the gaming industry is leveraging AI to automate asset creation and develop more responsive non-player characters.

In Spain, AI adoption is accelerating. Data from the Observatorio Nacional de Tecnología y Sociedad (Ontsi) indicates that 11.4% of companies with ten or more employees used AI in 2024, a figure that rises to 44% among large corporations with over 250 employees. While the INE reports a slightly higher adoption rate of 21.1%, studies suggest that one in four executives still lacks a concrete implementation plan, highlighting a gap between usage and strategic governance.

As organizations transition toward autonomous AI agents, critical challenges remain. Data quality is a primary hurdle, as fragmented or inaccurate information can undermine the effectiveness of intelligent systems. Furthermore, the rise of ‘shadow AI’—where employees use unauthorized tools to complete tasks—poses significant security risks. Research indicates that organizations facing unauthorized AI use experience higher costs from data breaches, emphasizing the need for robust governance, data quality management, and clear corporate policies.
