Reynosa City Council accused of press censorship via advertising contracts
The Reynosa City Council is accused of attempting to condition local journalists through their advertising agreements. According to reports, press officer Aldo Hidalgo has allegedly informed communicators of ‘new rules’ to maintain their commercial contracts with the municipality.
These rules reportedly require journalists to avoid constructive criticism of government officials and instead provide propaganda for municipal candidates, including Antonio Chávez and Federal Deputy Claudia Hernández. Failure to comply reportedly carries the threat of suspending advertising contracts.
Local editors, including Carlos Rafael Cortez of ‘Educare Noticias’ and Jaime Aguirre, have denounced these actions as repression and censorship. They have expressed a willingness to terminate their commercial ties with the municipality to preserve their journalistic independence and freedom of expression.
