Reza Pahlavi faces scrutiny following Australian Coalition invitation

Australian political figures within the Coalition have sparked debate following an invitation to Reza Pahlavi, the son of Iran’s last Shah, to visit Australia. While Shadow Foreign Affairs Minister Ted O’Brien stated that it is not Australia’s role to determine the future leadership or government form of Iran, other members of the Coalition have expressed more direct support for Pahlavi as a potential transitional figure.

Liberal Senator Andrew Bragg suggested that the removal of the Islamic Republic may require serious engagement with an alternative, identifying the crown prince as such a figure. Additionally, Liberal MP Julian Leeser drew comparisons between Pahlavi and prominent anti-Apartheid figures. Critics of this approach argue that the move constitutes a tacit endorsement of Pahlavi and note the historical context of his father, Mohammad Reza Shah, who was installed by the US and Britain in 1953.
