Rezum therapy uses water vapor to treat prostate enlargement

The Rezum method is being utilized as a minimal invasive treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). According to Associate Professor Dr. Osman Barut, a urology specialist at Medical Point Gaziantep Hospital, the procedure involves delivering controlled amounts of water vapor to enlarged areas of the prostate through the urethra.

The thermal energy from the water vapor creates a controlled effect on the prostate tissue, which then shrinks over time through the body’s natural healing processes. This reduction in tissue size aims to alleviate pressure on the urinary tract, addressing common symptoms such as weak urine flow, difficulty starting urination, frequent urination, and waking up at night.

Dr. Barut emphasizes that treatment must be personalized. Before the procedure, doctors evaluate the size of the prostate, the specific location of the enlargement, and the presence of a middle lobe to determine if the patient is a suitable candidate. Unlike traditional surgical methods, this approach does not involve cutting or removing prostate tissue.
