RFEF to fund egg freezing for elite female footballers

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is finalizing an agreement to subsidize egg freezing (vitrification) for elite female players. The initiative, developed in collaboration with Clínica Tambre, aims to help athletes manage the conflict between their peak professional years and their biological fertility windows.

Alexia Putellas, captain of the Spanish national team, has praised the move as a significant advancement, noting that it acknowledges the difficulty of serving the country while facing biological constraints. The program is expected to be officially presented in late September, though specific details regarding eligibility and the exact percentage of costs covered remain unconfirmed.

The initiative has sparked debate. While some view it as a tool for reproductive freedom, others, including athlete Ana Peleteiro, have criticized it. Critics argue that such measures might be viewed as ‘machista’ by incentivizing women to delay motherhood rather than addressing the systemic social and professional changes needed to make motherhood compatible with a high-level sports career. Medical experts also caution that egg freezing is not a guarantee of future successful pregnancy, as it does not stop the aging of the reproductive system.
