Rīgas satiksme initiates 121.5 million euro bus fleet renewal

Rīgas satiksme has concluded the tender process for a major renewal of its public transport fleet, involving a total estimated value of 121.5 million euros excluding VAT. The procurement includes 60 electric buses and 60 diesel buses, with an option to order an additional 30 to 90 electric vehicles over the next 32 months. Deliveries are expected to be completed by 2029.

Eight bidders have submitted proposals. The evaluation criteria place heavy emphasis on price (70%), followed by energy consumption and warranty terms (15% each). Notably, the Israeli company Auto Chen is among the contenders, offering electric buses from the Chinese manufacturer Golden Dragon, which is noted for its competitive pricing.

While the city moves toward electrification as part of the European Green Deal, diesel buses will remain in the fleet to ensure continuity of service during potential power outages or other crises. The fleet renewal is necessitated by the aging current fleet, where many vehicles have exceeded their 12-year service life, with some operating for over 20 years.
