Latvian basketball: Club transfers and national team updates
Several updates have emerged regarding Latvian basketball clubs and the national team. VEF Rīga has signed American guard Caleb Asberry, who recently won a championship with the Southland Sharks in New Zealand. Asberry joins a roster that includes several experienced Latvian players and international talent.
Rīgas Zeļļi has strengthened its squad by signing American guard Ben Schungh, a high-scoring player from the Polish league. Schungh previously won titles in Estonia and has experience playing across various European leagues.
On the international stage, the Latvian men's national basketball team is preparing for the second round of the 2027 World Cup qualifiers. Head coach Jānis Gailītis confirmed that Artūrs Žagars will not participate in the upcoming window, prompting the coaching staff to search for additional players to bolster the roster. The team is scheduled to face Croatia and Israel in late August.
Additionally, Latvian player Roberts Blumbergs discussed his move to the Spanish ACB league with Zaragoza. He also commented on the absence of Artūrs Žagars from the national team and addressed the controversial decisions of some players represented by the BSA Basketball agency to sign with teams in Russia.
