Rheden and Zutphen municipalities contest McDonald's expansion in court
A legal dispute has emerged between project developer Reggestede and the municipalities of Rheden and Zutphen regarding the establishment of new McDonald's locations. The developer is seeking permits for two sites: one on the Arnhemsestraatweg in Rheden near the Veluwezoom, and another on the Lochemseweg in Warnsveld.
The municipalities have denied the permits, arguing that the fast-food outlets do not align with local zoning plans or the character of the surrounding environments. In Rheden, officials expressed concerns that the restaurant is unsuitable for the area, while Zutphen officials specifically highlighted objections to the proposed drive-through service, fearing it would attract excessive traffic.
During court proceedings in Arnhem, the developer's legal counsel argued that a McDonald's functions as a restaurant and that a drive-through does not significantly increase traffic compared to standard takeout establishments. Conversely, local opposition has been significant, including an online petition signed by approximately 15,000 people citing concerns over increased litter, traffic congestion, and road safety.
