Rheinland-Pfalz burial reform sees low demand for new funeral methods

One year after the implementation of Germany's most liberal burial laws in Rheinland-Pfalz, new funeral methods remain rare exceptions rather than the norm. According to the Rheinland-Pfalz funeral directors' association, traditional cemetery burials continue to be the primary choice, expected to account for over 95 percent of the approximately 50,000 deaths projected for 2026.

While the reform introduced options such as river burials in the Rhine, Moselle, Saar, and Lahn rivers, as well as keeping urns at home or creating keepsakes from ashes, demand remains low. Authorities have approved only 42 river burials to date, representing about one-thousandth of total deaths. Other options, such as non-religious cloth burials, have seen virtually no demand.

Patrick Merscher, chairman of the association, stated that while people welcome the increased choice, traditional cemeteries remain the “cornerstone of burial culture” in the region. He also addressed previous concerns regarding the potential decline of cemeteries, noting that there is currently no evidence of a “dying of cemeteries.”
