E-bike ownership in Germany doubles to 31.4 percent
A survey commissioned by Eon and conducted by Civey reveals that e-bike ownership in Germany has more than doubled since 2020, rising from 15.2 percent to 31.4 percent. The data shows a significant increase in interest among younger demographics, with the share of owners aged 18 to 29 jumping from 19.4 percent to 27.2 percent in one year.
Regional ownership rates vary significantly. Niedersachsen leads the country with a 39.4 percent ownership rate, followed by Nordrhein-Westfalen (34.1 percent) and Bayern (33.7 percent). In contrast, Berlin has the lowest rate at approximately 15 percent, as residents there tend to rely more on rental e-bikes, e-scooters, and public transit.
Approximately 40 percent of e-bike owners use their vehicles as an alternative to cars. Additionally, studies highlight gender disparities in cycling; women report higher concerns regarding safety and infrastructure, suggesting that improving the cycling ecosystem is necessary to increase female participation.
