Rheinland-Pfalz expands solar photovoltaic use on parking lots
The use of dual-purpose surfaces, specifically installing photovoltaic (PV) systems over parking lots, is an increasing trend in the German state of Rheinland-Pfalz. Projects such as the solar canopy at the Neuwied swimming pool parking lot aim to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 166.88 tons annually.
Other installations have been noted at the Moselbad in Koblenz, the Westerwaldkreis district administration, and the Lotto Rheinland-Pfalz company parking lot. While these projects increase public acceptance of the energy transition by utilizing existing spaces, they face significant economic hurdles.
Stefan Herschbach, Managing Director of Stadtwerke Neuwied, noted that costs for these systems are several times higher than open-space PV due to the requirements for civil engineering and mounting structures. Additionally, politician Katrin Eder highlighted that strict German regulations, such as earthquake-proofing requirements in Neuwied, contribute to these high additional costs compared to other countries like France.
