Rheinland-Pfalz nursing chamber members to vote on future

The future of the controversial Landespflegekammer (State Chamber of Nursing) in Rheinland-Pfalz will be decided by a vote of its nearly 40,000 members at the end of the year. Social Minister Sabine Bätzing-Lichtenthäler announced that the voting process is expected to run from late November to mid-December.

The chamber, established in 2016 as the first of its kind in Germany, has faced significant criticism regarding its compulsory membership and technical issues. Recent legal challenges at the Koblenz Administrative Court also ruled in favor of several nursing professionals regarding membership fees for 2025.

If a majority of members vote against maintaining the chamber, the state government intends to draft necessary amendments to the Heilberufsgesetz (Healthcare Professions Act) and present them to the state parliament. Minister Bätzing-Lichtenthäler emphasized that the priority is the benefit to nursing professionals rather than the preservation of the existing structure.
