Rheinland-Pfalz sick leave rate decreases in early 2026

In the first half of 2026, the general sick leave rate in Rheinland-Pfalz decreased slightly to 5.5%, down 0.3 percentage points from 5.8% in the same period of the previous year. An analysis by DAK-Gesundheit, commissioned by the IGES-Institut and covering approximately 130,000 insured employees, reveals a significant shift in the causes of workplace absenteeism.

While respiratory infections saw a substantial decline—dropping by roughly 23% to 25%—musculoskeletal disorders and mental health issues have emerged as the leading causes of sick leave. Specifically, sick leave due to musculoskeletal issues rose by 9%, and mental health-related absences increased by 1%.

Rainer Lange, head of DAK-Gesundheit in Rheinland-Pfalz, noted that while the overall decrease is a positive signal, the focus must remain on prevention and supporting long-term employability. He also suggested considering partial sick leave to facilitate practical reintegration into the workplace.
