Rheinland-Pfalz court rejects lawsuit over school lesson cancellations

The Administrative Court in Neustadt an der Weinstraße has dismissed a lawsuit filed by Elija Walk, a 20-year-old former student, against the state of Rheinland-Pfalz. Walk sought a re-evaluation of his Abitur (high school graduation) grades in German, Biology, and Sport, alleging that 405 lessons were cancelled during his time at the Eduard-Spranger-Gymnasium in Landau.

According to documentation provided by Walk’s mother, the cancellations occurred over a three-year period, with some advanced courses missing nearly every second lesson in the second half of the 12th grade. While the Aufsichts- und Dienstleistungsdirektion (ADD) acknowledged an “unfortunate accumulation of cancellations,” the court ruled that there was no legal basis for a grade revision.

The presiding judge stated that whether the provided instruction was sufficient to prepare a student for the Abitur is a question that must be decided through political discourse rather than legal proceedings. The court noted that while a repetition of the exam might be a legal remedy for procedural errors, Walk had excluded that option. The case has drawn attention to the broader issue of teacher shortages and educational equality in Germany.
