Rheinland-Pfalz to implement mandatory language assessments for children
The German state of Rheinland-Pfalz is developing a new mandatory procedure to assess the language skills of children in daycare centers (Kitas) before they begin school. The initiative, titled ‘Sprache im Alltag beobachten’ (Observing Language in Everyday Life), aims to identify language development needs as early as possible to allow for targeted support.
Education Minister Ute Eiling-Hütig announced that the language assessment will take place approximately eighteen months before a child starts school. Currently, more than 100 daycare centers are participating in the development of this standardized method, with a goal of involving up to 300 facilities. The state intends to implement the process statewide by 2028. This project is a key component of the coalition agreement between the CDU and SPD in Rheinland-Pfalz.
