Rheinland-Pfalz tourism grows despite economic pressures

Tourism in Rheinland-Pfalz is experiencing growth, with the Ministry of Economic Affairs reporting an upward trend in both visitor numbers and overnight stays. Last year, the region recorded 8.8 million guests and 22.6 million overnight stays, representing a 2.0 percent increase in guests and a 1.2 percent increase in overnight stays compared to the previous year. In July, guest numbers rose by 6.2 percent to approximately one million.

Despite this growth, the hospitality sector faces significant economic pressures. According to the Sparkassen Tourism Barometer 2026, presented by Tourism Minister Michael Ebling and the Sparkassenverband Rheinland-Pfalz, businesses are struggling with rising costs for energy, labor, and raw materials, as well as a shortage of skilled workers.

Industry experts emphasize that providers must invest in quality, digitalization, and energy efficiency to remain competitive. Challenges include rising visitor expectations regarding price-performance ratios and geopolitical uncertainties that affect consumer spending. Recommendations for the sector include improving digital visibility, implementing active price management, and enhancing offerings during the off-season to stabilize occupancy.
