Rheinland-Pfalz wild mushrooms show low cesium levels

Wild mushrooms collected in the German state of Rheinland-Pfalz show low levels of radioactive cesium-137, according to recent monitoring results. The State Laboratory, in cooperation with local forestry offices, analyzed 49 wild mushroom samples to ensure consumer safety.

All tested samples remained significantly below the legal limit of 600 Becquerel per kilogram of fresh mass. The highest recorded value was 218 Bq/kg, found in bay boletes (Semmelstoppelpilze) in the Hunsrück region. Other measurements, such as those for porcini mushrooms in the Palatinate Forest, were even lower at 77.9 Bq/kg.

These ongoing radiological checks are part of long-term monitoring following the Chernobyl disaster. Forestry Minister Schneider stated that the results provide reassurance for mushroom foragers, noting that the contamination levels remain within safe tolerance limits and are consistent with findings from previous years.
