Rheinmetall ammunition production projects face political and labor tensions in Romania

Vicepremier Radu Miruță has announced plans for new ammunition production investments at Uzina Mecanică Sadu, involving a collaboration with the German company Rheinmetall. Miruță stated that two projects are currently under consideration: one involving Rheinmetall, which has already undergone parliamentary and CSAT review, and a second project focused on larger caliber ammunition.

Miruță alleged that administrative obstacles and political interference from the local PSD leadership in Gorj are attempting to redirect these investments to other areas. He emphasized that the decision regarding the location of such investments belongs to the private investor.

In a related development, reports indicate significant tension within the Romanian defense sector. While Rheinmetall has seen substantial financial growth and order increases following contracts with Romania, workers at domestic facilities like the Cugir Arms Factory have protested due to unpaid wages and low pay. Critics have raised concerns that funds from the German SAFE program are benefiting the German economy through Rheinmetall rather than supporting local Romanian industries like Romarm.
