Rheinmetall and HENSOLDT integrate passive radar in NATO air defence trial
Rheinmetall Air Defence and HENSOLDT have successfully demonstrated the integration of the Twinvis passive radar with the Skymaster command and weapon engagement system. The trial took place during the German Air Force’s Timber Express 2026 exercise under realistic NATO networking conditions.
By utilizing the Link 16 network, the companies fused sensor data to create a common air picture. The Skymaster system used this information to direct a Skynex air defence battery. Because Twinvis is a passive radar, it operates without the distinctive emissions of active radar, which can improve the survivability of sensor networks and support emissions-control (EMCON) strategies.
The technology aims to enhance situational awareness for protecting critical infrastructure and mobile military units. The successful integration provides a foundation for applying this networked approach to stationary Skynex systems, mobile Skyranger solutions, and various counter-UAS platforms.
