Rheinmetall begins serial production of SAR satellites in Neuss

Rheinmetall has launched the serial production of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites at its facility in Neuss, Germany. The production is being carried out through a joint venture, Rheinmetall ICEYE Space Solutions, in partnership with the Finnish satellite operator ICEYE. The company aims to manufacture approximately 50 satellites annually.

Under a multi-year contract valued at 1.7 billion euros, the German Bundeswehr has secured exclusive access to several satellites within the SPOCK 1 program. This allows the German military to independently task the satellites to obtain high-resolution imagery, which is currently being used to monitor NATO’s eastern flank and support deployed forces in Lithuania. The SAR technology is specifically noted for its ability to provide precise imagery during nighttime and through heavy cloud cover.

The first satellite produced at the Neuss site is scheduled for launch via a SpaceX rocket in early 2027. While the Bundeswehr is purchasing the imagery as a service, the satellites themselves remain the property of the joint venture.
