Rheinmetall construction site fire investigated as suspected political arson

Police in Hesse, Germany, are investigating a suspected case of arson at a Rheinmetall construction site near Kassel-Calden Airport. The incident occurred during the early hours of a Friday, when three construction vehicles were set on fire, causing damage to other nearby machinery.

Investigators are examining a confession posted online on a platform classified by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution as left-wing extremist. Hesse Interior Minister Roman Poseck described the incident as a “targeted attack” and suggested it may be part of a series of politically motivated crimes in the region.

The site is part of a planned 260 million euro investment by Rheinmetall and the state of Hesse to establish a logistics, training, and drone testing center. The State Security Criminal Investigation Department is leading the probe to determine if the attack was politically motivated.
