Rheinmetall shares face decline amid defense sector pressure

Rheinmetall shares have experienced a significant decline, losing approximately one-third of their value since the beginning of the year. Despite ongoing geopolitical tensions in Ukraine and Iran, defense stocks, including those of Rheinmetall, Hensoldt, and Renk, as well as US-based firms like Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, have faced recent downward pressure.

Market analysts suggest several contributing factors. Rising bond yields may be limiting the fiscal capacity of highly indebted nations, such as the US, to increase defense spending. Additionally, there is speculation that markets are pricing in potential political shifts in the US, where a Democratic majority in Congress could lead to increased fiscal responsibility and reductions in defense expenditures.

Furthermore, concerns have been raised regarding Rheinmetall's product alignment with modern battlefield requirements. While the company focuses on conventional technology, there is an increasing emphasis on unmanned drones and vehicles in current conflicts.
