Rheinmetall to modernize German frigate Bayern, service to 2035

Rheinmetall AG has been awarded a contract worth several hundred million euros to modernize the German Navy’s F123‑class frigate Bayern. The upgrade programme is intended to extend the ship’s operational life until at least 2035 and bring its combat capabilities up to current standards.

Work will be carried out at the Neue Jadewerft shipyard in Wilhelmshaven and is scheduled for completion by 2029. The scope includes replacement of the combat management system, modernisation of radar sensors, overhaul of propulsion and transmission, and reinforcement of anti‑submarine warfare equipment, all aimed at improving detection, targeting and overall readiness of the vessel.
