Rheinmetall AG has been awarded a contract to overhaul the German Navy's frigate Bayern (F 217). The contract value is described as being in the mid three‑digit‑million‑euro range. The work will be carried out at the Neue Jadewerft shipyard in Wilhelmshaven, where the vessel is currently docked for removal of major equipment. After the dismantling phase, the frigate will be moved to a floating dock for extensive upgrades.

The modernization program, scheduled for completion by 2029, is intended to extend Bayern’s service life to at least 2035. Upgrades include a new combat management system, upgraded radar sensors, refreshed propulsion components, enhanced anti‑submarine warfare capability and a refreshed weapons suite.
